About Aurora School

The Aurora School is a state-recognized kindergarten through 6th grade school located in Middlebury, Vermont, with an enrollment of 28 students. The school welcomes students of every race, color, creed, and national and ethnic origin.

Mission: The mission of Aurora School is to enable children to learn

Hallmarks: What makes Aurora School different from other options available to your family? Thematic Units with Hands-on Activities: Learning is most effective when everything is related. At Aurora, our academic program integrates all subjects (language arts, math, science, history, geography, art, music, drama, and technology). For example, during our ocean unit, we read books about life aboard whaling ships, write reports on sea animals, perform science experiments about ocean salinity, create maps of the oceans, paint ocean water colors, sing sea chanteys, and finish up with a 3 day field trip to Mystic Seaport.

Skills Building: In order be successful learners, we believe that children need to master certain skills, including reading and writing and math, and we provide focused instruction in these areas. Individualized Instruction: Because we have such a low student:teacher ratio, we are able to customize instruction to each child’s learning style and skill level.

Continuity of Student-Teacher Relationships: By working together year to year, the teachers gain a deep understanding of each child as a student and as a person. The students also come to know their teachers well and understand what to expect year to year.

Multi-age: Our students range from 5 to 12 years old. They study and play together, sometimes in small groups, sometimes as a whole school. Their varied ages mirror real-world relationships better than segregation by age.

Small and Supportive: With such a small student body, all members of the school learn to support each other and to interact responsibly.

Family Involvement: Parental involvement has been shown to be key to a child’s success in school. We ask that each family volunteer time at school, thus demonstrating to their child that education is a family priority.
